Chris White has today called on James Plaskitt to vote to scrap the government's abolition of the 10p tax band when MPs have the opportunity to have their say later this month. Writing to the local papers, Chris said:
"On Sunday, many local people on low incomes were hit by a cruel tax rise, imposed by Gordon Brown in his last budget when he abolished the 10p tax band. This tax rise means that nursery nurses will pay £154 more in tax every year; shop assistants will pay £185 more every year; and home carers £157 more every year.
Many people will find it astonishing that at a time when we all face rising bills and a higher cost of living, the Labour party choose to kick hard working taxpayers when they are down.
And before I receive the usual excuses from James Plaskitt, let me ask him this. As a government minister charged with reducing poverty, how does his tax rise help the cause? MPs will have a chance to stop this tax rise later this month – Mr Plaskitt should know that Warwick and Leamington will be watching to see if he does the right thing."
