Chris White has spoken out against Labour’s plans to extend the limit on detention without charge to 42 days, calling the move “a cynical political trick” that is far from the national interest. Under Gordon Brown’s plans, the Home Secretary would have the power to allow police to hold suspects for up to 6 weeks without any charge being made against them.
Shadow Home Secretary David Davis has attacked the plans, claiming they will be ineffective in the fight against terrorism and will act as “a recruiting sergeant for terror”. Both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have pledged to fight Labour’s plans in parliament, and even Labour’s former Attorney General has criticised the proposals, saying “the case has not been made for that extension and I can’t personally support it”.
Chris White added “This move is nothing more than a cynical political ploy to try and convince people that Labour is tough on terror – in reality extending detention without trial to a massive 42 days is simply an intrusion on our hard-won civil liberties, that won’t be effective in combating terrorism.”
