Chris White, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Warwick and Leamington, has slammed the local Labour MP’s claim that “no one in Warwick and Leamington will lose” following Labour’s botched abolition of the 10p tax band.
In his final budget as Chancellor last year, Gordon Brown announced the abolition of the 10p tax band to fund a headline-grabbing 2p ‘cut’ in the basic rate of tax in a cynical move that left 5.3 million people worse off. In a last-minute u-turn last week, the Chancellor announced that the personal allowance – the amount of money you can earn each year before being taxed – will be increased to compensate some of the victims of the botched tax grab. However, 1.1 million people on low incomes will still be worse off despite Labour’s humiliating u-turn.
It has also been revealed that the Chancellor’s desperate changes last week are only guaranteed for this year, meaning that the whole 5.3 million people may still find themselves out of pocket after next April.
Chris said: “People are already struggling with rising bills and having to pay more at the petrol pump, in the supermarket and on the high street. We have all noticed the rising cost of living and the last thing the government should be doing is seeking to penalise those on lower incomes.”
“James Plaskitt’s desperate claim that ‘no one in Warwick and Leamington will lose’ from the changes was incredible. The government’s tax policy is unravelling by the day and despite U-turn after U-turn – it simply should never have got to this.”
“ The decision to increase tax for those who can least afford it was a monumental error in judgement by Gordon Brown and it’s disappointing that Warwick and Leamington’s MP continues to give him his unquestioning support. We have a right to expect our MP to put politics to one side and do what’s right for people in Warwick and Leamington – and it’s high time that James Plaskitt took notice.”
