Chris White today wrote to local newspapers urging residents to take part in the consultation on proposed Post Office closures:
The post office has always been a centre of community service, providing convenience and a range of facilities for local people. Not everyone has the ability to travel into the town centres – local communities need local services. We are now in the impossible position where local areas will be pitted against each other because of a ‘dog eat dog’ closure programme – if one community campaigns successfully against a closure, a neighbouring branch will be shut down.
If your readers think, as I do, that maintaining this local service is important then it is vital that they let Post Office Ltd know their views. The consultation is under way and the closing date for individuals’ responses is August 4th. The full details of the consultation programme are available in the branches or online at www.postoffice.co.uk/networkchange, and feedback on the proposals can be posted to National Consultation Team, Post Office Ltd, Freepost Consultation Team. It is vital that we let them know the strength of feeling on this issue.
Labour holds the record for closing post offices faster than any other government – almost ten a week since 1997. The government’s announcement that it will shut down a further 2,500 post offices will decimate the network. People from all sections of our community need to now work together to stand up for our post offices and for the residents that rely on them day in, day out."
