"This week, thousands of A-level students up and down the country have been celebrating their exam results.  As a governor of a local school, I know how hard these students have worked, and I'd like to send my congratulations to them.   So, for once, instead of the usual annual debate about grade inflation, let's be happy and proud of our local students' achievements.

We must not, however, forget about those young people whose future at the moment is not so promising or exciting.  One in five 16 to 24 year olds – that’s one and a quarter million people – are not in education, employment or training.  More needs to be done to give every young person the opportunity to reach their potential and enjoy every success in life."
