Chris Grayling MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, visited Leamington this week to meet with Stephen Nightingale from the Council for Voluntary Service – Warwick District. He was joined by Chris White, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Warwick and Leamington.
Speaking after the meeting, Chris White said: “The CVS does outstanding work in bringing local charities and voluntary organisations together to work in the most effective way possible and I was very interested to hear about some of the issues that are affecting the way the voluntary sector operates at the moment.”
“I’ve always believed that the voluntary sector has a vital role to play in strengthening our community and it was interesting to discuss some of the ways in which central government could make it easier for voluntary groups to do the work that they do.”
Chris Grayling MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions added, “I was delighted to visit the Council for Voluntary Service in Leamington to hear about the excellent work they do in Warwickshire.
It was very clear from my visit that Government red tape and centralised targets are like a weight around the neck for voluntary groups. Whilst there needs to be accountability when spending public money there needs to be a balance to ensure that this money is not wasted on meeting endless Government targets.
Conservatives value the vital role the third sector plays and believe it is important to reduce the number of hoops voluntary groups have to jump through. It is time to trust the people who run the voluntary organizations to run them, instead of trying to control them from Whitehall.”
