Chris White, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Warwick and Leamington, has expressed his disappointment that the Conservatives’ amendment to force the Government to honour its promise of a referendum on the new EU treaty has been defeated in the House of Commons.
Despite the efforts of the Conservatives, and the 29 Labour and 13 Lib Dem MPs who defied their Party’s orders to vote for the Conservative proposal, the House of Commons rejected the referendum bid by 311 votes to 248.
Speaking after the news, Chris White, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, said: “It’s disappointing to see Labour MPs failing to offer the referendum that they so clearly promised in their last General Election manifesto. The Lisbon treaty is the EU Constitution in all but name – and what’s more, leaders across Europe have admitted as much publicly. It is simply not acceptable for Labour to renege on this promise.”
“With the bill having passed in the Commons I hope the House of Lords will keep up the pressure on Gordon Brown to be true to his word and let the people have their say on this important document.”
